Enthalpically driven peptide stabilization by protective osmolytes.

We determined the added enthalpic and entropic contributions of protective osmolytes to the folding of a model peptide into its native beta-hairpin state. In contrast to entropically driven steric "crowding", this study shows that sugars and polyols can act as protective osmolytes by primarily diminishing the unfavourable enthalpic contribution to folding.

Peptide-mediated synthesis of gold nanoparticles: effects of peptide sequence and nature of binding on physicochemical properties.

Biomimetic nanotechnologies that use peptides to guide the growth and assembly of nanostructures offer new avenues for the creation of functional nanomaterials and manipulation of their physicochemical properties. However, the impacts of peptide sequence and binding motif upon the surface characteristics and physicochemical properties of nanoparticles remain poorly understood. The configuration...

Energetics of target peptide binding by calmodulin reveals different modes of binding.

Thermodynamic parameters of interactions of calcium-saturated calmodulin (Ca(2+)-CaM) with melittin, C-terminal fragment of melittin, or peptides derived from the CaM binding regions of constitutive (cerebellar) nitric-oxide synthase, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, calmodulin-dependent protein kinase I, and caldesmon (CaD-A, CaD-A*) have been measured using isothermal titration calorimetr...

Stability of the Plasmodium falciparum AMA1-RON2 Complex Is Governed by the Domain II (DII) Loop

Plasmodium falciparum is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite that employs a highly sophisticated mechanism to access the protective environment of the host cells. Key to this mechanism is the formation of an electron dense ring at the parasite-host cell interface called the Moving Junction (MJ) through which the parasite invades. The MJ incorporates two key parasite components: the sur...

Serological Detection of FMD Serotypes by New Prepared Innovative Recombinant Hepta-Epitopic Peptide

Background: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious and economically important disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals worldwide. In recent years, a series of outbreaks of FMD have occurred in many countries. Recombinant protein synthesis incorporating protective B- and T-cell epitopes are candidates for new safer and more effective (FMD) vaccines that have potential to provide p...
